Josephine Cameron: Music

Motherless Child

(Josephine Cameron)
Traditional
I love the haunting loneliness of this spiritual. It was first known to appear in print in 1899 in a book titled Old Plantation Hymns, but it was sung in fields, churches, and in people’s homes long before that. It is the ultimate cry of longing—the depths of loneliness, when you feel you have no one and no where to turn to. Motherless. And all there is to hold on to is the promise of home, somewhere, someday.
Sometimes I feel like a motherless child
Sometimes I feel like a motherless child
Sometimes I feel like a motherless child

If this was judgment day
If this was judgment day
If this was judgment day
Every little soul would pray

Sometimes I feel like I’m almost gone
Sometimes I feel like I’m almost gone
Sometimes I feel like I’m almost gone
