Long Night
(by Josephine Cameron)
This is one of the first songs that Gerhard Graml collaborated on, and I am so pleased with how it turned out. Gerhard actually plays three bass lines on some parts of the song-one plucked, and two bowed parts in harmony with one another, creating a beautiful, full effect. I wrote "Long Night" for one of my sisters, who was going through some hard times. The story in the song is not her story, but I wanted to find a way to tell her that things were going to be all right, without making it seem like I thought her troubles were small. And things did turn out all right, with a little effort and time. She made the difficult decision to honestly scrutinize and make real changes to her life, which is always harder than it seems, and always something to strive for.
Under this light
Under the glare of this starry night
I can't breathe
And everyone knows what's become of me
It's over all right
He couldn't be any more out of sight
I understand
But I wish I had someone to hold my hand
When I can't sleep
When it's been a long night
When it's been a long, long night
When nobody knows you and nothing seems right, hold on
'Cause even a long, long night will break for dawn
It's harder to fight
It's hard to come down from such starry heights
So I'm still here
I can't seem to make this town disappear
And everyone's thinking the same old thing
Everyone's thinking I'm just what I seem
Well I could have everything under my sleeve
I could be waiting
When it's been a long night
When it's been a long, long night
When nobody knows you and nothing seems right, hold on
When it's been a long night
When it's been a long, long night
When nobody knows you and nothing seems right
When you want to run, just to wait out the fight, hold on
'Cause even a long, long night will break for dawn
