Josephine Cameron: Music

Shenandoah

(Traditional)
I recorded this song on my last cd, American Songs. It is a song with such depth and loveliness that I wanted to slow it down, and try it again, this time with a fuller arrangement. Gerhard Graml came up with a beautiful, relaxed bass line, and we were lucky enough to bring Richard Nelson in to play electric guitar. Watching Richard work was incredible. He knew exactly how and where to fill the space, and when to leave a precise emptiness. My favorite moment was when he played the stunning solo at the end of the tune and everyone in the studio was blown away. Richard walked back to the control booth, brow furrowed, and asked tentatively, "Do you think that will be all right?"
Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you
Away, you rolling river
Oh Shenandoah, I long to see you
Away, I'm bound away
Cross the wide Missouri

Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Away, you rolling river
Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Away, I'm bound away
Cross the wide Missouri

Oh Shenandoah, I'll not deceive you
Away, you rolling river
Oh Shenandoah, I'll not deceive you
Away, I'm bound away
Cross the wide Missouri

Oh Shenandoah, I'm bound to leave you
Away, you rolling river
Oh Shenandoah, I'm bound to leave you
Away, I'm bound away
Cross the wide Missouri
