Every Night When the Sun Goes In
(Traditional)
This is a desperately sad traditional folk song about a young girl who becomes pregnant and finds that the father of the child will have nothing to do with her once he finds out. I asked Gerhard Graml to take this heartbreaking song and open it up, bring it into unexpected territory. He brought in a stunning and startling mix of bowed bass and electronic sound events that give the song a kind of industrial, ground-down sound that really amplifies the sense of loneliness and despair.
Every night when the sun goes in
Every night when the sun goes in
Every night when the sun goes in
I hang down my head and mournful cry
I used to wear my apron low
He'd follow me through sleet and snow
But now my apron's to my chin
He'll face my door and won't come in
Every night when the sun goes in
Every night when the sun goes in
Every night when the sun goes in
I hang down my head and mournful cry
I wish to the Lord my babe was born
A'sitting on his papa's knee
And me poor girl was dead and gone
And the green grass growing over me
Every night when the sun goes in
Every night when the sun goes in
Every night when the sun goes in
I hang down my head and mournful cry
